Il s'intéressa à de nombreuses sciences, notamment l'astronomie, l'alchimie, la chimie et la psychologie. Il naquit le 7 août 980 à Afshéna, près de Boukhara faisant partie de la province de Khorasan en Perse, actuellement en Ouzbékistan, et mourut à Hamadan, en Iran, en août 1037.
