He received his bachelor's degree from Shaanxi University of Technology in 1983 and his Doctor of Science degree from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1996. From 1997 to 2002, he conducted postdoctoral research at Xidian University and the Second Artillery Corps Engineering College.
