By following the co-evolution of particle accelerators and particle physics, readers will learn why the accelerators are built, how they work, and what "results" they produce. The book highlights the great ideas (e.g. synchrotron) and technological advances (superconducting magnets) that boosted the potential of accelerators and led to new discoveries, eventually resulting in the standard model of particle physics. Many concepts are illustrated with figures derived from three-dimensional models; these include theaccelerators, detectors, and particles. Background information about the main protagonists, along with pointers to further reading, e.g. from "Scientific American," are provided in endnotes.

Volker Ziemann promovierte 1990 an der Universität Dortmund in Beschleunigerphysik. Nach Postdoc-Positionen in Stanford am SLAC und in Genf am CERN, wo er am Design des LHC arbeitete, zog er 1995 nach Uppsala, wo er am Elektronen-Kühlerspeicherring CELSIUS arbeitete. 2005 wechselte er an die Physikabteilung, wo er seitdem Physik unterrichtet. Er war für mehrere Projekte in der Beschleunigerphysik bei CERN, DESY und XFEL verantwortlich. 2014 erhielt er den Thuréus-Preis der Königlichen Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften in Uppsala. Er war Mitglied des Senats der Universität Uppsala, diente in Bewertungskomitees für das deutsche Forschungsministerium, ist Mitglied des Wissenschaftlichen Beirates des Helmholtz-Instituts in Mainz und lehrt an CERN-Beschleunigerschulen. Er ist Autor von drei Büchern und über 200 Artikeln und Berichten.
