The First Northern Ireland Peace Process

The First Northern Ireland Peace Process covers the various attempts to end the 'Troubles' from 1972-76. These attempts included secret talks with the Provisional IRA and a parallel process to build a political consensus between the British and Irish Governments and the main constitutional parties in Northern Ireland.

Thomas Hennessey's new book is the latest addition to scholarly works exploring the early to mid-1970s, a highly significant period in Northern Ireland's political history. A wealth of archival sources pertaining to these years is now available to researchers, and there is much within the documents to debate. The First Northern Ireland Peace Process provides a thought-provoking contribution to the literature on this period. (Shaun McDaid, American Historical Review, February, 2017)
