The 4th edition of the textbook- Signals and Systems in Biomedical Engineering presents a systems approach to human physiology and provides tools for systems analysis and signal processing. The book presents the mathematics and the physiology in a closely intertwined manner - the physiological data is interpreted based on systems models, and the models are simulated using numerical simulation to show that virtual experiments are comparable to real experiments. It also introduces the use of machine learning and virtual experiments in signal processing. The latter half of the book focuses on physiological systems with chapters on neural communication, excitable tissue stimulation, electromyography, neuromuscular control, cardiovascular blood flow modeling, and infectious disease modeling. Methods for both biophysically detailed models and blackbox models are presented. This textbook is a comprehensive resource to a systems approach to physiology for senior undergraduate and graduate students of engineering, medicine, and allied sciences.

Suresh Devasahayam has held professorial positions at IIT-Bombay, CMC-Vellore and IIT-Jammu over the last 35 years, combining the teaching of Signal Processing, Physiological Systems Modeling and Instrumentation with research and development in Physiological Measurement and Rehabilitation Engineering. He has worked on measurements in nerves, muscles and the cardiovascular system as well as motor rehabilitation. Beginning his professional training at the College of Engineering, Guindy, in Electronics and Communication Engineering he continued as a graduate student at the University of Illinois at Chicago, in the Bioengineering department where he studied the electrical behavior of skeletal muscle and the mechanical behavior of single motor units. After a brief stint as a postdoctoral fellow in Neuroscience at the University of Alberta, he moved to Bombay in 1990 as a member of the faculty at the Indian Institute of Technology where he spent 12 years, followed by 20 years at the Christian Medical College, and then 3 years at the Indian Institute of Technology, Jammu. He now works in his own design and test lab as an independent researcher developing neuromuscular test and control instruments. He and his wife live in The Nilgiris where with their books they chase an ever-receding horizon of knowledge.
