The Thornfield Covenant

Autorentext

Scarlett J. Thorne reimagines gothic English classics the way the nineteenth century may have whispered them after the lights went out — as love stories that bite with vengeance. Her debut, a dark fae reimagining of Wuthering Heights, Lord of the Heights — earned Booklist's praise as "a dangerously romantic journey," with a "searing love story that fans of Rebecca Yarros, Rachel Gillig, and Sarah J. Maas will devour." The Thornfield Covenant, her second novel, now turns the unique touch to Jane Eyre: reimagined as an orphan who reads the dead, and a cursed estate, with a deadly bargain only she can unmake.

"A searing love story that fans of Rebecca Yarros, Rachel Gillig, and Sarah J. Maas will devour"— Booklist, on Scarlett J. Thorne's Wuthering Heights retelling Now she retells Jane Eyre as dark gothic romantasy. Jane Eyre sees dead people. Born with hollow-sight, she has the illegal gift of seeing the dead… the residue of old vows and ancient, buried bargains forged centuries ago. This 'curse' has made her a commodity, a thing to be traded, all while she is being drained — sold in childhood and schooled at an institution where the wards are not to keep the others out, but to keep the prisoners in. As she grows older, she gets increasingly determined to control her own destiny and to belong to no one, and she looks to escape her tortured existence. And Thornfield Hall answers her. This is a gaslit Britain where the old families keep their estates and their bloodlines through House-Pacts. And just as in her first book, Lord of the Heights, Thorne creates a living, breathing architectural entity like no other. But House-Pacts and covenants require ongoing payments, generation after generation, in human suffering. And this house has been waiting for Jane, while its master, Edward Rochester, tries desperate measures to keep the Covenant alive. And then there are the candles, that burn only when a truth is named — and a child being groomed for a purpose no one dares speak aloud. A gothic-manor dark romantasy of bargain magic, a marked heroine, a brooding master with a buried crime, and a slow burn that turns scorching — open door, with darkness on the page: this is Jane Eyre as never imagined before. Book One of The Hollow Covenant series. One candle has burned. Eleven still remain.
