Sutton Place, the Manhattan neighborhood that runs between East 53rd and 59th Streets between First Avenue and the East River, has a long and fascinating history. Rosario Candela, the premier architect in New York City in the 1920s, designed many of the luxurious buildings that were instrumental in making it a desirable address among the wealthy elite. In addition to the unique architecture, its list of residents has always featured some of the richest and most famous people in the world, including I.M. Pei, Aristotle Onassis, and Marilyn Monroe. Fifth Avenue and Park Avenue have carried much social currency as a desired address in Manhattan, but through the years Sutton Place has been assigned a certain cachet that is unrivaled in New York City. Local author and resident Lawrence R. Samuel reveals the history and personalities that have made this neighborhood so special.
