This book highlights reviews, perspectives, and original research that contribute to the advanced interdisciplinary studies of theories, technologies, and strategies on THz sensing, biophysics, communications, and bio-effect research. The terahertz (THz) frequency covers a spectrum important for applications such as body security, non-destructive matter sensing, bio-imaging, and bio-medicine. It overlaps with the characteristic fingerprints of molecular vibrations and rotations (e.g., proteins and DNA) and thus could resonantly interact with various bio-matters. The 2021 Nobel Prize in medicine was granted for the discovery of ion channels of temperature and pressure sensing. The frequency of THz makes it absorbable for bio-effect and modulation of bio-molecules, especially for ion channels. Besides, the high-speed modulation in terahertz is a holy grail for integrated photonics in high-capacity computations. This topic has raised widespread interest in fundamental science and applications for THz. The proceedings are suitable for researchers and students interested in interdisciplinary research at the intersection of electromagnetics, physics, and life sciences.

Chao Chang is recognized as Distinguished Scholar of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and Leading Talent of the National Ten Thousand Talents Plan of China. He has been honored with the China State Science Award (as the 1st recipient), the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Innovation Prize, the IEEE NPSS Early Achievement Award, the Tan Kah Kee Young Scientist Award, and the Special Award of the China Youth Science and Technology Awards.

Dr. Chang is Chair of the China Terahertz Biology Society, General Chair of the 2018 Asia-Pacific Conference on Optoelectronic and Photonics Technology (APCOPTS), and Technical Program Committee Member for the 2020 International Conference on Optical Probes and Sensors (ICOPS). He serves as Member of the IEEE Plasma Science and Applications Technology Executive Committee, Founding Chair of the IEEE NPSS Xi’an Chapter, and Senior Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science.

Feng Qi is Professor at the Shenyang Institute of Automation (SIA), the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He completed his bachelor's degree at Zhenjiang University and subsequently earned both his master's and Ph.D. degrees from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. Following his doctoral studies, he pursued postdoctoral work at RIKEN in Japan, Goethe University in Germany, and the University of Birmingham in the UK. In 2015, he joined SIA where he established the THz Imaging Group. Currently, he heads the Key Laboratory of Terahertz Imaging and Sensing in Liaoning Province and serves as Chairman of the academic board for the Key Laboratory of RF, Microwave, and Metamaterials in Guangdong Province. He has delivered four keynote speeches at international conferences and 18 invited talks. Additionally, he has served as Vice Chairman of GSMM and as Session Chair for various international conferences, such as IRMMW-THz and ICC.

Liangliang Zhang is Professor at Capital Normal University in China. She has led several significant projects, including the Beijing Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars, the Youth Beijing Scholar Program supported by the Beijing Government, and the National Key Scientific Instrument and Equipment Development Project. She has been honored with the National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award, the First Prize of the Scientific Research Excellence Awards from the Chinese Ministry of Education, and the First Prize of Scientific and Technological Progress from the China Instrument and Control Society. She has also received a nomination for the Top Ten Advances in Optics in China. Dr. Zhang serves as Member of the Youth Editorial Board for Chinese Laser Press and Ultrafast Science and is currently Topical Editor for the Journal of the Optical Society of America B. Her research focuses on terahertz aqueous and air photonics and terahertz spectroscopy and imaging.

Lei Hou is Professor at Xi'an University of Technology, China, and Leading Talent in scientific and technological innovation under the Shaanxi Provincial Special Support Plan. He is Leader of a key scientific and technological innovation team in Shaanxi Province and Recipient of the Xi'an Youth Science and Technology Talent Award. Dr. Hou also serves as Vice Director of the Key Laboratory of Ultra-fast Optoelectronics and Terahertz Science in Shaanxi Province and is Member of the Terahertz Branch of the Chinese Electronics Society and the Terahertz Biophysics Branch of the Chinese Biophysics Society. He has been awarded two second prizes of the Shaanxi Provincial Science and Technology Awards. His research interests include high-power terahertz photoconductive antennas and high-excitation-state discharge gas terahertz wave detectors.
