This book revives the Socratic method as a practical form of critical inquiry for a world marked by ideological polarization, religious extremism, political mistrust, and democratic strain. Through a series of imagined dialogues, Socrates engages modern interlocutors on faith, fanaticism, communal conflict, cultural identity, governance, nationalism, patriotism, and social justice.

Combining philosophical argument with sociological and historical insight, the book shows how reasoned questioning can expose dogmatism, challenge prejudice, and cultivate intellectual humility. It distinguishes faith from fanaticism, patriotism from unthinking nationalism, and democratic citizenship from passive obedience.

Situated at the intersection of philosophy, sociology, political theory, and education, the book is rooted in the Indian context while addressing questions of universal relevance. It presents dialogue not as mere conversation, but as a civic discipline essential to pluralism, critical thinking, and democratic renewal.

Uses Socratic dialogue to examine faith, fanaticism, nationalism, democracy, and civic responsibility Combines philosophy, sociology, political theory, and education in an accessible interdisciplinary framework Connects contemporary Indian debates with universal questions of reason, pluralism, justice, and democracy

Klappentext

Democracy is based on the assumption that all differences can be resolved by means of rational dialogue. Professor Patel shows, through probing, persistent, and perceptive examination, the limits of this assumption. The task is brilliantly executed, and its results deserve to be valued more widely. I know no better work in this area.

This book uses the Socratic method to examine some of the most urgent questions confronting contemporary societies: faith and fanaticism, religious conflict, nationalism, democratic responsibility, political leadership, patriotism, and social justice. Through imaginative dialogues between Socrates and modern interlocutors, it demonstrates how persistent questioning can expose contradictions, challenge prejudice, and encourage critical reflection.

Rooted in contemporary India while addressing questions of universal relevance, the book draws together philosophy, sociology, political theory, and education. It argues that reasoned dialogue does not require abandoning faith, identity, or patriotism; rather, it enables us to examine them with intellectual humility and ethical responsibility. In an age of polarization and misinformation, Socratic inquiry emerges as a vital resource for pluralism, critical thinking, democratic citizenship, and peaceful coexistence.
