The series Advances in Industrial Control aims to report and encourage technology transfer in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology impacts all areas of the control discipline. New theory, new controllers, actuators, sensors, new industrial processes, computing methods, new applications, new philosophies . . . , new challenges. Much of the development work resides in industrial reports, feasibility study papers and the reports of advanced collaborative projects. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of such new work in all aspects of industrial control for wider and rapid dissemination. The potentially devastating effect of an operator making the wrong decision in the control of a highly automated system or process is well known. However as even more large-scale automated systems become likely, for example automated highways for cars, it is increasingly important to be able to assess the safety of these mixed or joint systems. Carlo Cacciabue's monograph on the modelling and simulation of these mixed processes of technological systems and human operators is extremely timely. The monograph provides an up-to-date and systematic presentation of the basic concepts and tools needed. This comprehensive coverage of the subject also includes a review of the last twenty years of research effort in the field.

A practical overview which brings together the complex issues involved in analysing human-machine interaction - valuable for those researching or working in this area * The presentation of the work is systematic and clear, with lots of illustrations and diagrams, giving it an appeal for students at graduate level * A specific selection of sample cases is presented, showing the practical aspects of the presented material

Klappentext

The complexity of modern technological systems has strongly increased the role and relevance of the few but crucial control tasks allocated to the human operator in the loop. This book develops a framework that gives guidelines and support to the analysi s of human-machine interaction, showing the types of simulations, analyses and domains of applications within this field. It focuses on the basic elements of human-machine system simulation and how models are actually developed in theoretical abstract terms and transformed into computerised, numerical simulations. Within the text the reader can find basic requirements and gu idelines for development of simulation models of human-machine interaction, a number of theories and numerical simulations of human behaviour, and a specific selection of sample cases showing the practical aspects of implementing the models. It is a valuable, practical overview of paradigms and simulation approaches that will be of great benefit to the engineer and designer of human-machine interfaces, and more broadly to anyone involved in the research or practice of human-machine interact ion.
