Beschreibung

Oscar Wilde's A Woman of No Importance is a brilliant social comedy that exposes the hypocrisies of late-Victorian aristocratic society. Set amid drawing rooms and country-house conversation, the play entwines sparkling epigram with moral seriousness, turning fashionable wit into a weapon against gendered double standards. Beneath its polished surface lies a pointed critique of reputation, illegitimacy, and the unequal moral codes imposed on women and men. Wilde, already celebrated for his paradoxes, aestheticism, and theatrical brilliance, wrote the play in 1893 at the height of his dramatic career. His own position as both insider and outsider to elite society sharpened his perception of its rituals and evasions. Like much of his work, the play transforms personal insight into social satire, revealing how elegance can conceal cruelty and how language can both mask and disclose truth. This play is recommended for readers interested in Victorian drama, feminist literary history, and the art of social satire. It offers more than urbane amusement: it is a study of power, shame, and moral courage. Wilde's wit dazzles, but his compassion gives the work its lasting force.
