Silver Birch's Medium

Klappentext

Silver Birch's Medium emerges as a vivid, deeply researched portrait of Maurice Barbanell, the journalist turned medium whose voice helped shape twentieth century Spiritualism. Drawing on years of dedicated research, archivist and historian Nick Richbell reconstructs Barbanell's journey from East London idealist to the steady hand behind Psychic News and the earthly channel for Silver Birch. Despite his profound influence, Maurice Barbanell has remained an overlooked figure in the development of Modern Spiritualism. Blending biography, intellectual history, and cultural analysis, the book reveals the moral seriousness, discipline, and steadfast belief that animated Barbanell's life's work. Courtroom battles, international tours, editorial struggles, and the intimate mechanics of mediumship are set against the broader evolution of Modern Spiritualism, offering readers both narrative richness and historical clarity. At once tribute and critical contribution, Richbell's study offers a textured, engaging, and long overdue recognition of a figure whose influence reached far beyond his immediate circle. Beautifully illustrated and meticulously crafted, Silver Birch's Medium restores Barbanell to his rightful place in the shaping of twentieth century spiritual thought and provides an essential resource for anyone interested in mediumship, religious history, or the enduring philosophy of Spiritualism.
