The morphology of spatially stuctured materials is a rapidly growing field of research at the interface of statistical physics, applied mathematics and materials science. A wide spectrum of applications encompasses the flow through porous and composite materials as well as microemulsions and foams. Prof. Dr. Dietrich Stoyan, geboren 1940, war Mathematik-Professor an der TU Bergakademie Freiberg, von 1991 bis 1997 ihr Rektor. Er publizierte zahlreiche mathematische Bücher und ist Mitglied der Leopoldina und anderer Wissenschaftsakademien. In letzter Zeit widmet er sich der Freiberger Universitätsgeschichte.
