Beschreibung

Letters Written During a Short Residence in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark is at once a travel narrative, philosophical meditation, and intensely personal epistolary work. Moving through Scandinavian landscapes of harbors, forests, commerce, and domestic life, Wollstonecraft transforms observation into moral inquiry: she weighs social customs, political economy, gender relations, sensibility, solitude, and the claims of reason against feeling. Its prose is lucid, lyrical, and reflective, standing at the crossroads of Enlightenment travel writing and emerging Romantic subjectivity. Mary Wollstonecraft, best known for A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, wrote these letters after a difficult journey undertaken in 1795 on behalf of Gilbert Imlay, her lover and the father of her child. Her political radicalism, feminist commitments, experience of revolutionary Europe, and emotional distress all inform the book's searching tone. The result is not merely reportage but a record of a mind testing public ideals against private suffering. This book is highly recommended to readers interested in feminist thought, travel literature, Romanticism, and the history of modern selfhood. It offers both intellectual force and emotional candor, revealing Wollstonecraft as a writer of remarkable range, whose reflections remain elegant, humane, and startlingly contemporary.
