Klappentext

Mark Gallup's photographic history follows snowboarding from its rebellious early years into a global mountain culture shaped by athletes, travel and risk.

Winter Count draws on Gallup's long archive as a snowboard photographer, bringing together images made across decades in the Canadian Rockies and farther afield, including Greenland and Nepal. The photographs record changing styles, equipment, terrain and personalities as snowboarding moved from the margins of winter sport into the mainstream.

Gallup was present for backcountry lines, expeditions and the everyday moments around them. His photographs are accompanied by the stories and context behind the images, giving readers a view of the sport from someone who spent years travelling with the people who helped shape it.

This is a visual history for snowboarders, mountain photographers and readers interested in outdoor culture. It preserves both the scale of the landscapes and the particular energy of a sport learning what it could become.
