Meditations

Klappentext

A classic of Stoic philosophy. A new way to read it. Nearly two thousand years ago, Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius recorded a series of private reflections never intended for publication. What survived as Meditations became one of the defining works of Stoic philosophy-a record of one man's attempt to meet power, frustration, loss, duty, uncertainty, and death without surrendering mastery of his own mind. The Fourth Initiate Edition preserves George Long's 1862 translation while transforming the reading experience through original philosophical annotations by Gregory David Peters. Rather than reducing Marcus Aurelius to lessons, slogans, or rules for living, the annotations engage the text-questioning it, extending it, challenging it, and connecting its ideas to philosophy, psychology, science, history, symbolism, metaphysics, paradox, and the enduring problems of human existence. Along the way, the reader encounters questions that reach beyond Stoicism itself: What truly lies within our control? Is suffering found in events themselves, or in the judgments we make about them? What do we owe others when they fail us? Can we govern ourselves without becoming indifferent to what we feel? What remains of the self when status, reputation, and possession are stripped away? How should the knowledge that we will die change the way we live? The result is neither a modernization nor a conventional commentary. It is a conversation across nearly two thousand years between Marcus Aurelius, the contemporary reader, and questions that remain unresolved. Read the original. Question everything. Draw your own conclusions. Meditations: Fourth Initiate Edition is Book #002 of the Fourth Initiate Library, a collection of enduring works presented for readers who believe a great book should not merely be read-it should be thought with.
