Katherine Mansfield's In a German Pension is a sharp collection of sketches set among the residents of a Bavarian spa-house, where meals, gossip, illness, courtship, pregnancy, and patriotism become occasions for social exposure. Written in a brisk, ironic, and often merciless style, the book belongs to the Edwardian tradition of satirical travel observation while also anticipating Mansfield's later modernist compression, psychological acuity, and fascination with moments of social performance. Mansfield, born in colonial New Zealand and formed artistically in London's cosmopolitan literary circles, drew upon her own stay in Germany in 1909, when ill health and personal upheaval placed her in precisely the kind of pension she describes. Her outsider's position-female, colonial, artistic, and socially mobile-helped sharpen her perception of class manners, gender expectations, and the absurdities of national self-importance. This volume is recommended to readers interested in the beginnings of literary modernism, women's writing, and the art of the short story. Though Mansfield later regarded it as an apprentice work, its wit, cruelty, and observational brilliance make it indispensable for understanding the emergence of one of the twentieth century's finest short-fiction writers.
