The Othering of Conflicts and Mass Atrocities" delves into a fundamental question of global empathy: why do we care about the suffering of some groups but remain indifferent to the suffering of others? In this book, the author explores the sociopolitical dynamics that shape our perceptions of suffering, mass atrocities, and conflicts around the world. Using historical, political, and psychological frameworks, the book unpacks how media, political narratives, and cultural biases contribute to the selective empathy we show toward certain groups while ignoring others. By examining case studies of mass atrocities, wars, and humanitarian crises throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, the author dissects the patterns of "othering" the process of dehumanizing certain populations or conflicts. From the Holocaust to the Rwandan Genocide, from the Syrian Civil War to the migrant crisis, the book aims to shed light on why some tragedies dominate the global discourse while others fade into obscurity. Drawing on theories of identity, power, and the construction of "us vs. them" narratives, this work seeks to provoke reflection on how society constructs hierarchies of suffering and how these hierarchies shape global intervention, aid, and policy decisions.

Employs an interdisciplinary lens to explore why we empathise with some peoples' suffering and not others Unpacks the psychological, historical, cultural and political forces that shape selective empathy Puts forward a solution-driven framework for change and building an equitable global humanitarian consciousness
