The Reichstag powerfully evokes the discontinuities, catastrophes and successes of Germany's modern history. Before the Nazi seizure of power, the shape of German democracy was fought over in the Reichstag chamber as well as in Weimar and on the streets. Jan Martin Ogiermann, b. 1975, read History and Jewish Studies at the universities of Frankfurt, Jerusalem and Potsdam, and followed up with Holocaust Studies in Berlin. He contributes to contemporary history websites, working for Radio Berlin-Brandenburg among others. He is a freelance author and editor, and lives in Berlin.
