In 1858 Hermann von Helmholtz published a paper that today is recognized as the foundation of vortex dynamics.

To celebrate the sesquicentennial of Helmholtz's paper, IUTAM sponsored a symposium that was held at the technical university of Denmark in October 2008. The papers presented at the symposium gave a good overview of where the field of vortex dynamics stands today. This volume contains almost all of the papers presented as lectures at the symposium, and also a few of the poster papers.
