Gunther Schmidt arbeitete in der Komplexen Analysis, geriet aber als Mitarbeiter in die Ingenieurmathematik. Der in München sich entwickelnden Informatik half er früh mit Projekten und Vorlesungen zu Logik, Semantik, Übersetzerbau und Graphentheorie.
