This study compares natio nal constitutional principles and institutions as well as the constitutional principles and organization of state powers in Europe, not limited to the European Union. Although the institutional setting is rather different, the common principles and values of the European Union cannot be denied and they extend even beyond its members. The author still maintains his basic assumption that the comparative view cannot exclude the reciprocal influence of national and European constitution building for the past and the future.
