Edzard Ernst studierte Psychologie und Medizin an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in München. Nach mehreren Jahren in der medizinischen Grundlagenforschung und seiner Facharztanerkennung hatte er Professuren in Hannover und Wien, wo er auch die österreichische Staatsbürgerschaft erhielt. 1993 gründete er den weltweit ersten Lehrstuhl für Komplementärmedizin an der Universität Exeter, UK. Neben seiner Arbeit in der Alternativmedizin widmet er sich intensiv der Forschung über Medizin im Nationalsozialismus, über die er ebenfalls umfassend publiziert hat.
