The Works of Edgar Allan Poe - Volume 1

Klappentext

The Works of Edgar Allan Poe - Volume 1 presents the complete selected first volume of the Raven Edition, not a claim to contain all of Poe's collected works. It opens with an appreciation signed W. H. R., James Russell Lowell's account of Poe, and Nathaniel Parker Willis's notice of his death. Eight tales follow in their source order. The historical framing lets readers encounter responses to Poe beside the fiction rather than treating this selection as an anonymous modern anthology.

The tales are "The Unparalleled Adventures of One Hans Pfaall," "The Gold-Bug," "Four Beasts in One-The Homo-Cameleopard," "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," "The Mystery of Marie Rogêt," "The Balloon-Hoax," "MS. Found in a Bottle," and "The Oval Portrait." The volume ranges across imagined travel, detective inquiry, a concealed treasure and cipher, satire, a literary hoax, a dangerous voyage, and a portrait with a disturbing history. Readers seeking a particular tale can use the printed Contents to go directly to it.

This volume's version of "The Gold-Bug" includes two source-set symbol tables: one recording sign frequencies, the other matching cipher symbols with letters. Both are retained as readable three-column tables. Their punctuation, signs, counts, and row order matter to Legrand's explanation and remain part of the narrative evidence. The Lowell and Willis prose, the source's verse and epigraphs, tale notes, and the selected volume's ending are likewise retained. Electronic Project Gutenberg wrapper and redundant navigation are excluded from the print text.

The Marie Rogêt tale identifies itself as a sequel to "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." Its subtitle is kept with its title in the interior, while the source's epigraph follows in order. Readers can follow Dupin's two investigations together, or begin elsewhere in the volume: the tale headings serve as finding points, not as a required reading sequence. The historical Raven Edition compilation year is not established by the selected witness, so this record does not assign the whole collection an invented original-publication date.

This Standard Large Print Edition is a 7-by-10-inch case-laminate hardcover. The body is set in 18-point Atkinson Hyperlegible Next with 27-point line spacing. Ragged-right setting avoids stretched gaps between words, and the text is not divided at line endings. Generous margins give the bound pages room to be held and read. These are concrete design choices for a sustained reading session; they are not a claim that a fixed-print book earns WCAG conformance. The selected interior has no illustrations. The exterior illustration is separate and identified in the book's provenance.

For library selection, this one ISBN identifies the Standard hardcover of Volume 1. It offers a source-bound Poe collection with both its literary works and its historical introductory material. Its contents support fiction, nineteenth-century American literature, detective-story, and accessible-format collections. The source text is complete within the selected first-volume boundary, with every one of the eight tales present; later Poe volumes and other works are outside this book. The ISBN, contents, and physical edition are stated so a cataloguer can distinguish this volume from other selections or editions.

Clearview Editions uses Project Gutenberg eBook 2147, The Raven Edition. Poe is the principal literary author; Lowell and Willis wrote the historical prose named above. The appreciation retains only its source initials, W. H. R. A separate Lagniappe relates Poe's 1841 essay on secret writing to these tales.
