The story of unipolar mania remains largely untold despite research suggesting it is not as uncommon as previously thought. Due to the absence of identifying criteria in current diagnostic systems in use e.g. DSM and ICD, the area receives little attention in terms of research. This book aims to increase awareness about this seldom discussed topic with a view to inspiring other researchers to consider unipolar mania as a topic for investigation.

After qualifying as a psychiatrist, the author spent 7 years in private practice. He then returned to the public service and academic medicine, completing his doctorate in the field of bipolar mood disorder, with specific attention to unipolar mania. At present he is Clinical Head at Elizabeth Donkin Hospital, Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, RSA.
