Biogeography considers the distribution of biological units over a wide range of scales. The units range from genotypes, populations and species to families and higher taxa. Processes can be local, such as the isolation on islands due to sea-level fluctuations, or large-scale tectonic processes that separates continents and creates oceans. In all processes time is an important factor and by combining data on recent patterns with paleontological data the understanding of the distribution of extant taxa can be improved. This volume focuses on speciation due to isolation in island-like settings, and the evolution of large-scale diversity as the result of origination, maintenance and extinction.

Sie werden auch den scharfsinnigsten und ernsthaftesten Fragesteller befriedigen. Die Person, der Mrs.Veal nach ihrem Tode erschien, ist Mrs. Bargrave; sie ist seit fünfzehn oder sechzehn Jahren meine vertraute Freundin, und ich kann mit bestem Gewissen für ihren vortrefflichen Ruf in dieser Zeit bürgen; und ich kann auch ihren makellosen Charakter bestätigen, den sie von frühester Jugend bis zur Zeit unserer Bekanntschaft bewiesen hat. Seit sie diese Begebenheit erzählt hat, wird sie jedoch von den Freunden des Bruders der Mrs. Veal verleumdet; diese Leute scheinen zu denken, daß die Erzählung von jener Erscheinung nur eine schändliche Erfindung der Mrs. Bargrave ist, und sie versuchen alles mögliche, ihren guten Ruf zu untergraben und die Geschichte lächerlich zu machen. Aber auch unter diesen Umständen und ungeachtet der schlechten Behandlung durch einen sehr boshaften Ehegemahl trägt Mrs. Bargrave stets ein liebenswürdiges Wesen zur Schau, und nicht das geringste Zeichen von Kummer und Niedergeschlagenheit zeigt sich in ihrem Gesicht; nein, auch nicht unter der rohen Behandlung durch ihren Mann, deren ich und verschiedene andere Personen unzweifelhaften Rufes Zeuge gewesen sind.
