Auditory and Vestibular Efferents

This book focuses on auditory and vestibular efferents, topics linked together by the inner ear connection. Top researchers in the field review the history of the subject and summarize what is known and what still needs to be done.

Efferent sensory systems have emerged as major components of processing by the central nervous system. Whereas the afferent sensory systems bring environmental information into the brain, efferent systems function to monitor, sharpen, and attend selectively to certain stimuli while ignoring others. This ability of the brain to implement these functions enables the organism to make fine discriminations and to respond appropriately to environmental conditions so that survival is enhanced. Our focus will be on auditory and vestibular efferents, topics linked together by the inner ear connection.

The biological utility of the efferent system is striking. How it functions is less well understood, and with each new discovery, more questions arise. The book that is proposed here reflects our vision to share what is known on the topic by authors who actually have made the observations.

Combines reviews from the top researchers in the field Includes a set of integrated chapters that will review the history of the subject and summarize what is known and what still needs to be done Will serve as a reference for graduate students, educators, clinicians, and other researchers Includes supplementary material: sn.pub/extras

Klappentext
The biology of auditory and vestibular efferent systems encompasses a wide range of issues where exploration requires knowledge of basic anatomy, electrophysiology, and pharmacology of the inner ear. These topics lead into discussions of development and evolution of efferent systems. The functional significance of these systems is highlighted by an overview of central efferent anatomy, neuronal responses, and plasticity following efferent activation.Contents: • Introduction David K. Ryugo is Professor (retired and part time) in the Departments of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and Curran Foundation Professor of Neuroscience at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research. Richard R. Fay isDirector, Parmly Sensory Sciences Institute and Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Minor and Professor of Psychology at Loyola University of Chicago. Arthur N. Popper is Professor in the Department of Biology and Co-director of the Center for Comparative and Evolutionary Biology of Hearing at the University of Maryland, College Park. About the series: The Springer Handbook of Auditory Research presents a series of synthetic reviews of fundamental topics dealing with auditory systems. Each volume is independent and authoritative; taken as a set, this series is the definitive resource in the field.
