Klappentext

From the "master of suburban scandal" (Samantha M. Bailey) and author of You Deserve to Know, soon to be a Hulu television series, comes a new suspense novel about the secrets we keep to survive.

Jodi Wagner has reluctantly returned to the suburban cul-de-sac where she grew up to care for her aging mother. On her first night back, she sees a young woman walking alone down the middle of the street.

The next morning, the woman is missing.

And Jodi is the last person to see her alive.

An aspiring documentary filmmaker, Jodi has a new subject: the missing woman. As she digs deeper, she learns of a second woman who vanished from the cul-de-sac years earlier. Neighbors insist the reclusive man living next door is responsible. Jodi is hesitant to believe her childhood neighbor could be a monster. But as she turns her camera his way, the mounting evidence against him becomes impossible to ignore.

Meanwhile, Doreen Weaver has a story of her own. In 1970s Fresno, while a serial killer terrorized the city, Doreen was a teenage bride married to a charming but volatile man whose rages forced her to flee. But not before she glimpsed something truly terrifying.

As Doreen's past and Jodi's investigation collide, the documentary becomes more personal than Jodi ever imagined, uncovering secrets women have kept for generations in order to survive.

At its center is a terrifying truth -- the worst horrors are often closest to home.
