This volume has been compiled with great assistance from the Report on the Settlement of the Sadar subdivision of the Puri district, by Mr. H. McPherson, I.C.S. It presents detailed description about the physical features of Puri, its hill system, river system - Deltaic rivers, Eastern rivers and Khurda rivers, ports, fauna, and climate. It gives an elaborate account of the history of the region, from Pre-historic period to British conquest, along with the information about the Rajas of Khurda and Rebellion of 1804. The Gazetteer provides considerable space to the general characteristics of the people, culture, language, religious festivals, different races, and caste system. It tells about the development of religions, including the Legend of Jagannath, theories of Buddhist origin, Vaishnavism, temple, idols, Car festival, temple staff, Maths and pilgrimage. Apart from vital statistics, the volume discusses the problems of sanitation, drainage and overcrowding. It informs about the measures of forest conservations, system of management, protected forest, and prospects.
