Football is a violent sport. The author, Jeff Rooney, learned that the hard way after being knocked unconscious, for three hours, from a hit during a game. He returned the next season, wearing a special helmet, to co-lead his team in their quest for the championship.

Jeff Rooney loved football and built lifelong bonds with his teammates and coaches. During a game he was knocked unconscious for three hours, suffering a major concussion. He was unable to play again that season. His final year he returned to co-lead the 1984 12-0 Vanden Vikings to the Sac-Joaquin Section championship. The teams he played on in five years recorded 45 wins, 4 losses, and 2 ties and had three undefeated seasons. Three decades after he last stepped off the field he decided to share the journey that made them champions by writing the book - We Took Names: The Time of Vikings, Friends and Family, and pull their story from the dustbin of history, so his friends and coaches would never be forgotten.
