Microalgae, such as algae and cyanobacteria, which are cultivated for their biomass and are rich in lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates, can be used as a renewable energy source. Seeking to mitigate climate change and ensuring energy security, this approach provides several advantages, including being carbon neutral, requiring low water usage, and having high oil content. However, challenges persist, including scalability, cost-effectiveness, biomass harvesting, conversion efficiency, water management, and land use competition with food crops.

This book describes the development of a production method of bioenergy from microalgal biomass, and examines the entire process development, from strain improvement and cultivation optimization, through the conversion process, and systems integration. The book delves into related technologies, including catalytic conversion, separation and purification techniques. The potential of microalgal bioenergy as a sustainable energy source is assessed by considering scalability, cost-effectiveness, and environmental impact.

**Hemantkumar N. Akolkar, PhD, is Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Rayat Shikshan Sanstha's Abasaheb Marathe Arts and New Commerce Science College, Maharashtra, India. He is an academician and researcher who has taught for the last 15 years at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has published over 65 research papers in national and international journals and conferences of repute. Also he has published 06 Indian patents and 06 books with International publishers like SpringerNature, Royal Society of Chemistry, etc. His areas of interest are heterocyclic chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry, and green chemistry. Professor Haghi holds a BSc in urban and environmental engineering from the University of North Carolina (USA) and holds two MSc degrees, one in mechanical engineering from North Carolina State University (USA) and another one in applied mechanics, acoustics, and materials from the Université de Technologie de Compiègne (France). He was awarded a PhD in engineering sciences at Université de Franche-Comté (France). He is a regular reviewer of leading international journals.
