This contributed volume encompasses contributions by eminent researchers in the field of geotechnical engineering. The chapters of this book are based on the keynote and sub-theme lectures delivered at the Indian Geotechnical Conference 2017. Dr. A. Murali Krishna is an associate professor at the Department of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from IISc Bangalore; M.Tech. degree from IIT Kanpur and B.Tech. degree from SV University, Tirupati. His research interests include: earthquake geotechnics, geosynthetics and ground improvement, site characterization, and numerical and physical modelling of geotechnical structures. Dr. Murali Krishna has published 140 technical papers in international/national journals and conference/seminar proceedings including book chapters. He is a recipient of the BRNS Young Scientist Research Award, BOYSCAST Fellowship and HERITAGE Fellowship. Dr. Murali Krishna is currently an 'executive member' of the IGS and has been a member of TC 203 of the ISSMGE since 2011. He is actively associated with the IGS Guwahati chapter, organising local activities/workshops and the IGC2017. Dr. Murali Krishna has organised national and international workshops and short courses. He is a reviewer for several national and international journals.

Dr. Arindam Dey is an assistant professor in the Geotechnical Engineering Division, Department of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. He obtained his Ph.D. and M.Tech. degrees from IIT Kanpur and his B.Tech. from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. His research interests include geotechnical earthquake engineering, geosynthetics engineering, ground improvement, characterisation of geomaterials, geophysical investigation, foundation engineering, slope stability and landslide analysis, rock mechanics and numerical modelling of geotechnical Structures. He has published 135 technical papers in international/national journals and conference/seminar proceedings including books, book chapters and technical reports. He has received research awards from the IGS and ISSMGE. Dr. Dey is a recipient of the 'Fellowship for Young Indian Researchers from the Ministry of Italy'. He has been involved in organising national and international workshops and short courses. He is currently the Honorary Secretary of IGS Guwahati Local Chapter and has been actively involved in organising local activities/workshops and the GeoNEst, IGC-2017. He has delivered several invited lectures in India and abroad and is a reviewer for several national and international journals.

Dr. S. Sreedeep is currently a professor in the Geotechnical Engineering Division, Department of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. He obtained his Ph.D. and M.Tech. degrees from IIT Bombay and B.Tech. from Calicut University. His research interests include behavioral studies of unsaturated geomaterials, hazardous waste management, utilisation of waste materials and bio-geotechnology. Dr. Sreedeep has published 170 technical papers international/national journals and conference/seminar proceedings. He was a recipient of the Shamsher Prakash Research Award for Geotechnical Engineering in 2014. He is a member of ASCE, ASTM, IACMAG, IGS and TC 106 of ISSMGE. He is a reviewer for several national and international journals.
