In turn, Part II examines the historical development and defining characteristics of major legal traditions. It begins with the Roman and civil law tradition, followed by an exploration of the English common law tradition, the Islamic legal tradition, and various indigenous legal traditions. Special attention is given to legal transplantation, including a case study on the Japanese legal tradition and its interactions with Chinese and Western legal influences.

George Mousourakis is Professor in the School of Law and the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Hiroshima University in Japan and invited Visiting Professor at the University of Parma in Italy. His research and teaching interests lie in the areas of comparative and transnational law, legal history (history of the Roman and civil law tradition) and jurisprudence. His extensive portfolio of written work includes several books and a large number of articles, book chapters, book reviews and other works published internationally in English and other languages.
