The ideas of the Bakhtin Circle have been widely applied within literary and cultural studies, but application is seldom combined with a critical appraisal of the ideas themselves. In this wide-ranging and multi-disciplinary volume, the intellectual heritage of the Circle is investigated and the adequacy of their ideas in relation to contemporary language theory and new media is assessed. As a result, the nature and limitations of Bakhtinian ideas are clarified and the productive core is revealed. Bakhtinian ideas are related to such diverse phenomena as legal philosophy, classical rhetoric, contemporary communication theory and visual arts, with their potential for understanding contemporary culture emerging as a result. The book will be a valuable resource not only for those interested in the ideas of the Bakhtin Circle, but also for those attempting to develop a coherent theoretical approach to language in use and problems of meaning production in new media.
