Was 20 July 1944 a mere rebellion of conscience or did the conspirators have other military motivations? The attempted coup was in part an element of the power struggle within the polycratic Nazi regime. The fact that von Stauffenberg and his co-conspirators were committed to other notions of the military's role in the state made it difficult after 1945 to situate them in the tradition of resistance against war and a criminal regime.
