In developing their materialist notion of history and their critique of ideology, Marx and Engels were especially drawn to Max Stirner's The Ego and Its Own. This study explores the import of this interconnection by considering the ways that they shared an ideological affinity with the late German Enlightenment of the Vormärz. In addition, Pagel offers a new interpretative decoding of the manuscripts of The German Ideology .
