The highways leading to Rome in the High Middle Ages, including the famous Via francigena , served as multifunctional lines of transfer for religious, political, and artistic communication. At the most explosive peaks of the conflict between crown and curia in the 12 th century, artists experimented with a great variety of architectonic designs. The book casts new light on the iconological meaning of selected structures.
