The doctrine of Gregory the Great, the first monk on the papal throne, had a significant influence on medieval theology and particularly on Western mystical tradition. Against the backdrop of the collapse of the ancient civilization at the end of the 6th century, Gregory developed a theology which was rooted in the Latin tradition, had a strong eschatological orientation, and upon which the antithesis temporalis - aeternus had a determining influence.
