In order to examine and assess real components in practice, it is often necessary to break them down into sub-components. Such disassembly (or free body diagrams) involves little theory, but often proves quite difficult in real-life practice. Thus, the textbook covers the need for free body diagrams to resolve problems in the classical mechanics of materials.
