This volume is the first unabridged publication of Horváth's early dramatic works. The earliest texts, An Epilogue and Murder in the Mohrengasse (1923/24), as well as the 1924 drama Nobody, rediscovered only in 2015, are still marked by expressionism. With The Mountain Railway (1927) and The Belle Vue (1927), Horváth develops a "new folk play." The burlesque A Sexual Congress (1929) is a clear precursor to Tales from the Vienna Wood.

Zusammenfassung

Ödön von Horváth (19011938) is one of the most renowned writers of the 20th century. The Vienna Edition provides the critical edition of his complete works which scholars have been demanding for a long time. The edition contains all of Horváth's completed and uncompleted works together with all the author's letters and biographical documents. The secure final versions of the texts, the exact account of the process of their composition and the critical re-evaluation of many sources reveal a different view of Horváth's work, his way of working and his biography.
