Since China adopted its ?reform and opening up= policy in 1978, the country has undergone impressive progress. It has advanced from being a developing country to become the second largest economy in the world and has considerably raised the average standard of living of its population. Nicola Spakowski shows how Mao Zedong=s successors have succeeded in leading the country out of isolation, initiating reforms and constantly adapting the political and economic system to new challenges. She describes the special characteristics of Chinese politics, economy and society and explains the problems and conflicts that accompany the fundamental transformation that the country has gone through.

Nachdem sich China im Jahr 1978 eine Politik von "Reform und Öffnung" zum Ziel gesetzt hatte, durchlief das Land eine beeindruckende Entwicklung. Von einem Entwicklungsland hat es sich zur zweitgrößten Volkswirtschaft der Welt vorgearbeitet und den durchschnittlichen Lebensstandard der Bevölkerung beträchtlich erhöht.
Nicola Spakowski zeigt fundiert auf, wie es den Nachfolgern von Mao Zedong gelungen ist, das Land aus der Isolation herauszuführen, Reformen anzustoßen und das politische und ökonomische System unablässig an immer neue Herausforderungen anzupassen. Sie stellt die Besonderheiten der chinesischen Politik, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft dar und erklärt die Probleme und Konflikte, die mit der fundamentalen Umgestaltung des Landes einhergehen.
