The authors of the articles in this volume take the perspective of jurisprudence and economics in linking the need for sustainable state financial structures to the federal structure of a state. Debt brakes, tax legislation and the federal fiscal equalization scheme are examined against the backdrop of worldwide financial crises, negative demographic trends and social justice.

The legal principle of sustainable development has ecological, economic and social dimensions. Within the parameters of sustainable development, it is financial sustainability in times of escalating national debt, global financial crises and negative demographic trends which is of particular significance. The authors of the articles in this volume take the perspective of jurisprudence and economics in linking the need for sustainable state financial structures to the federal structure of the state.
