This study examines the function of allegorism in a total of 63 Romance language sermons from six 12 th and 13 th century sermon collections. A cognitive-semantic analysis of 250 individual allegories shows the ways that the authors of these sermons found opportunities for interpretative creativity within highly conventional patterns of interpretation.
