The royal civil engineer Nicolas- Antoine Boulanger (17221759) represents a peculiarity within the French Enlightenment. Largely unknown during his lifetime, he rose to become an Enlightenment figure of European prominence after his untimely death. This study takes a systematic look at Boulanger for the first time against the background of his posthumous staging as a radical philosophe and asks why a dead man could make such headlines.
