When we think about the origins of European culture and history, the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey (c. 7th century BCE) often springs to mind. But what came before Homer? Klaus Tausend investigates this long-neglected question by closely examining the development of states, societies and cultures in the Aegean region from the 7th to the 2nd millennia BCE. The book aims to present the history and significance of the early cultures of the Aegean within a manageably sized volume and in language that is easily understood. It shows that the Aegean acted as an intermediary in the diffusion of technology and knowledge from Mesopotamia and Egypt into the European cultural area.

Zusammenfassung
Wird nach den Ursprungen europaischer Kultur und Geschichte gefragt, denkt man haufig an den Autor der Ilias und der Odyssee (ca. 7. Jh. v. Chr.). Doch was war vor Homer? Dieser lange Zeit vernachlassigten Frage geht Klaus Tausend nach, indem er die Entwicklung von Staatswesen, Gesellschaften und Kulturen im Bereich der Agais vom 7. bis zum 2. Jahrtausend v. Chr. unter die Lupe nimmt. Dabei zeigt sich, dass durch die gis Technologien und Wissen aus Mesopotamien und gypten in den europischen Kulturraum vermittelt wurden. Von dieser Vermittlerrolle profitierte die gis selbst am meisten. In einem berschaubaren Umfang und in einer gut verstndlichen Sprache beschreibt Tausend die Geschichte und Bedeutung der frhen Kulturen in der gis.
