This history of brief novella-type narratives in the European literatures of the Middle Ages extends from the earliest beginnings in the 12th century to the final ousting of the verse narrative by the cyclical verse novella established by Boccaccio in the course of the 16th century. The historical interrelations can only be properly understood in their European dimensions. Accordingly, this survey can serve as a model for a comparative history of the genre.
