This volume is a revised edition of Ingerid Dal's standard work on the historical development of German syntax. Since the appearance of the previous edition, research on German linguistic history has made major progress. The most important new research findings regarding syntax have been incorporated in the text, without abandoning the textbook's time-honored philosophy of being guided by empirical data.
