As one of the most significant representatives of the literary realism of the second half of the nineteenth century, C.F. Meyer wrote the novella The Judge at the threshold to the epoch of literary modernism. This volumes provides commentary on The Judge, a frontier justice drama, which is complicated from the standpoint of legal history and reveals C.F. Meyer's proximity to symbolism.
