In the twentieth century, the Freideutsche were testing how to productively combine individual education, community, and social responsibility. This study is the first to systematically examine the practical, programmatic, and organizational stabilization of bourgeois Freideutsch youth subcultures and the socio-cultural practices associated with them, from the Kaiser period to the Weimar Republic.
