Vertical accessibility and circulation are essential aspects of architectural design and planning. This book, entitled Treppen/Stiegen ( Stairs/Steps ), covers the fundamentals and thus an essential aspect of vertical access. In addition to structural and physical requirements, design- and safety-related factors must also be considered, with particular emphasis on barrier-free construction. Various types of structure are presented in detailed subsectionsvarying according to the building materialsand supplemented by an exposition of the planning criteria for installing elevators and escalators.
